I can pretty reliably get at least 2-3 per run in most cases unless I get really unlucky (Door Lord, High Priest, Ammoconda sometimes), but I definitely remember starting out in this game and wondering how the hell I was ever going to even be able to reach the third or fourth floor, let alone complete the run. I also love the mechanics like Mastery Rounds and all, but I can understand the criticisms from people who feel it's too punitive. I'm not worrying about carrying progress over into future runs because besides unlocks, you're starting from a fresh slate every time.

Everything is saved between runs which guarantees you become stronger over time, and if you're good enough at the game, minimal or no grinding is necessary at all but it exists to help players get stronger and feel a sense of progress. Hades is much easier to start with, but the other two are some of the best persistent progression roguelites I've ever played. If that's the case, I'd recommend Hades or especially Rogue Legacy 2 and Heroes of Hammerwatch. While I actually favor that Gungeon has no persistent progression between runs, this is valid and I can understand the preference for persistence. I mean the games sheer charm kept me grinding away till i killed the past of like 4/5 characters but i would have loved some permanent upgrades between runs.Īlso master rounds are just mean, hey lets give people extra health, but only after they prove they dont need it!

New characters? both the hidden characters are harder than the base ones.
